The new season is well-underway with a very successful BBQ after chukkas last weekend in glorious sunshine and the first HPA tournament of the season, The Spring Forward Cup, taking place on the 9th-10th May.

At the start of the month several of our club members represented Welsh, Scottish and English Students respectively. Rebecca Griffiths, Amy Young, Emily Griffiths (new member) and Rachel Cooper, played at The National Student Equestrian Championships on behalf of SUPA, playing their role in the attempt to get BUCS accreditation. Warwick University member, Charlie Jones (who trains at Offchurch) also played. Meanwhile, jet-setting Tessa Johnson was representing Scottish Students in the SUPA Tri-Nations Tournament in Wicklow, Ireland. Ben Shanson and Chris Morrall, both recent graduates, go down in the history books having competed in the first ever SAPA Inaugural Tournament for university alumni at the La Martina National Arena Polo Championships.

In other university polo news, the Club will once again be hosting the La Martina National Polo Championships in June and this year will be bigger and better than ever. Two new club members and Warwick University students, Jenna Townend and Jill Oxenham, are the lucky recipients of the new Lady McLintock Polo Scholarship, which will support them financially for the National Championships. The following week also sees the return of the much-anticipated Chukka SUPA University Nations Cup, where Scottish students will battle to regain their title.

This season will see a new kit range to be launched in conjunction with Akuma, providing comfortable and stylish playing and leisure-wear, as well as the possibility of new custom-designed team shirts. They will also be designing attractive new chukka shirts in club colours, which will be available very soon.

Building on the success of the Intensive Polo Days, corporate days and mid-week chukkas, we have a number of new members ready to get on the field. Last year, Accenture joined us throughout the summer – it was such a success that this year we will be running a Lawyers vs Consultants tournament towards the end of the season – it’s set to be a great duel. With many more female members this year and players starting to come up through the ranks, we are also planning a series of women’s chukkas and tournaments.

This year we welcome Grant Collett (2), who will be basing himself and his ponies at Offchurch, having previously played at RCBPC. Grant joins resident pro’s Matias Amaya (4) and Club Manager, Glen Percy (1). Some more good news for both new and existing members in that in response to the current global economic climate membership fees are on hold for 2009. Finally, congratulations to club members Mr & Mrs Richard Picton-Jones on the birth of their son Oliver!

2009 looks to be better than ever. With a host of new players and a fun, relaxed and friendly social scene, there’s no doubt that we will all have a great summer season.

Offchurch Bury Polo Club continued a successful run as we fielded 10 teams, from Warwick and Loughborough, for the La Martina National University Arena Polo Championships. We returned with 2 National Champion teams, a runners-up team, an undefeated beginner’s team and a plethora of other places. The Loughborough Intermediate team played extremely well against very experienced teams – in particular, Amy Young’s talent shone through and she proved a force to be reckoned with. Results are as follows:

Novice 1: Warwick – National Champions

Novice 2: Warwick – Runners-Up

Beginner 1: Warwick – Undefeated

Beginner 2: Warwick 4th, Warwick 6th, Warwick 10th

Two players from the University of Warwick also won the Combined section.

Pictures of the teams are available from the Official Club photographers
